In April 1950 Fraser (Ap) replaced Blunden as cultural attachè of the United Kingdom Liaison Mission in Tokyo, but suffered a breakdown and had returned to England by August 1951. Blunden’s foreword here, to the only collection of Fraser’s writing about Japan, is reserved, focusing on Fraser’s ‘friendship and hospitality’ while he was in the country.
